The Eritrean community in Greater Los Angeles stands as a powerful testament to resilience, unity, and unwavering commitment to both heritage and homeland. From the earliest days of the struggle for independence to the ongoing work of national development and defense, Eritreans in this region have demonstrated extraordinary dedication not only to their adopted home in the United States, but to their ancestral homeland of Eritrea.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Eritrean community in Greater Los Angeles in particular and the whole world in general for their tireless efforts, their unity in purpose, and their remarkable contributions over the decades.
A Community Rooted in Sacrifice and Solidarity
The journey of Eritreans in Los Angeles is inseparable from the history of Eritrea’s long and determined struggle for independence. For thirty years, Eritreans waged one of Africa’s most resilient liberation movements, culminating in independence in 1991 and international recognition in 1993.
Throughout that period, the diaspora particularly in cities like Los Angeles played a critical role. Community members organized tirelessly to support the liberation movement led by the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front. They held fundraisers, awareness campaigns, cultural events, and political advocacy initiatives. They mobilized students, families, workers, and professionals around a singular purpose: freedom for Eritrea.
The sacrifices were not abstract. Families were separated. Resources were pooled and sent across oceans. Weekends were not for rest, but for meetings, planning sessions, and community gatherings focused on the cause. In homes, churches, and community halls across Greater Los Angeles, Eritrean identity was preserved and strengthened even as the struggle intensified thousands of miles away.
Celebrating the Spirit of Independence
When Eritrea formally declared independence following the 1993 referendum, joy reverberated from Asmara to Los Angeles. The Eritrean community here celebrated not only a political milestone, but the culmination of decades of sacrifice and unity.

The community’s commitment to preserving Eritrean languages, traditions, and values ensures that identity remains strong even in the heart of Southern California.
Independence was not the end of Eritrea’s challenges. In the years that followed, the nation faced external threats and complex regional dynamics. During critical periods, especially times of border conflict and heightened national security concerns, the Eritrean community in Greater Los Angeles once again rose to the occasion.

By formally recognizing these unique individuals, the community reinforces an essential value deeply rooted in our heritage: respect for service.
These honorees represent the very best of our shared identity. Some supported the struggle for independence of Eritrea through tireless organizing and sacrifice. Others strengthened the community during times of national challenge, offering guidance, stability, and unwavering commitment. Many have contributed to national development efforts, educational advancement, healthcare initiatives, youth empowerment, and the preservation of Eritrean culture and language in the diaspora.
By recognizing these individuals publicly, the community accomplishes several powerful things: it preserves the history of sacrifice and contribution, it inspires younger generations to value service and responsibility, it reinforces unity by honoring contributions across backgrounds and generations, and it ensures that dedication does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
Recognition is not merely ceremonial, it is educational and inspirational. When elders, organizers, professionals, youth leaders, mothers, fathers, and volunteers are honored, their stories become part of the living legacy of the community.
We commend the Eritrean community in Greater Los Angeles not only for its decades of service, but also for its wisdom in celebrating those who have carried that service forward with distinction. By honoring its own, the community strengthens its foundation, uplifts its values, and sets a powerful example for future generations.

Greater Los Angeles is one of the most diverse metropolitan regions in the world. Within this dynamic environment, the Eritrean community has managed to maintain unity across regional, religious, and linguistic backgrounds.
Christians and Muslims, highlanders and lowlanders, young and old have stood together under one national identity. This unity mirrors the spirit that sustained the independence struggle and continues to guide national development.
It is a powerful reminder that shared purpose transcends difference.
Empowering the Next Generation
A particularly inspiring aspect of the Eritrean community in Los Angeles is its investment in youth. Young Eritrean Americans are excelling in education, business, technology, healthcare, law, and public service.
At the same time, they are encouraged to remain connected to their heritage learning Tigrinya, Tigre, and other Eritrean languages; understanding their history; and participating in community activities.
Youth conferences, cultural workshops, and mentorship programs ensure that the sacrifices of the past are neither forgotten nor taken for granted. Instead, they are transformed into motivation for excellence and service.
